The Board of Christian Outreach is responsible for encouraging the congregation to carry out Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:15). Board members endeavor to do this in a variety of ways, so that Zion’s members can choose an outreach activity which will enable them to comfortably share the Good News of the Gospel. Rosemary Schmoock, Board Chairperson, can be contacted for more information about Outreach opportunities.
Outreach activities include the following:
Greeters
These volunteers help to welcome visitors and members to Worship Service, and assist with visitor follow-up information. The Greeter Coordinator is Vicky Shannon. The Greeters training meetings are held once a year for those who wish to assist in this way.
Soles Winning Souls
Volunteers in this group distribute simple invitations to Zion’s worship services in the doors of neighborhood homes several times a year (especially before major church holidays, e.g., Christmas and Easter). Coordinator for this group is Richard Sack. Walking ability is the only requirement!
Going to Mexico twice a year (Fall and Spring), volunteers in this area of outreach help to build simple one-room houses for needy families in Mexico. They also work with an orphanage supplying clothing and other needed items. The entire building project is done in one day. Amy Knapp can be contacted for details.
Planting Gospel Seeds While Serving Human Needs
Utilizing the training of World Relief and Human Care Coordinator Pastor Carlos Hernandez, Don Hays welcomes volunteers who want to help him visit Zion’s neighbors. This group focuses on asking how we can serve the needs of the community in the area immediately surrounding our congregation.
Mission To Nicaragua
Mission Opportunities Short-Term (MOST)
The initial one-week mission trip by nine volunteers from Zion in the Spring of ’06 (distributing eye glasses in Nicaragua) has initiated what will hopefully be a regular outreach opportunity every other year. Amy Knapp is the liaison for this group. Look for details in ’08!
Lori Knapp, Preschool Director and Outreach Board Member, assists volunteer efforts to reach parents and families involved in our schools
Pocket Crosses and Calendars
These items are available to members and friends of the congregation so that the Gospel can be shared informally. They can be found in the church narthex.
